Popular Non-Swing Exercise Programs for Swing Dancers

May 25, 2008

First, Take this quiz to find out what exercise method is right for you!

Why Do you like Lindy?
a) It’s just so F&!#ing Badass!
b) It makes me feel good inside, like, about the world, and everyone!
c) Because of the deep roots in American history.

If you answered mainly “a”

1. P90X

“I’ve drinken the P90x-aide.”

Look around you. However attractive they may be (and they are), most lindy leads tend to be lanky, toneless, skinny white boys. Enter P90x, a macho home workout program to replace the silly antics of Richard Simmons or Billy Blanks. Other than giving you the perfect “V,” this program will amp up you’re A-game for the Liberation division at ULHS with a calendarized system to mark your progress. A combination of cardio, strength training, and power yoga in daily DVD programs has been kicking assless-white boy tail with a cult-like following (what is “muscle confusion,” anyway?).

2. Yoga/Pilaties

“Heal the world, make it a better place…”

If you’re convinced you’re all ready getting enough cardio by regular Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday night dances and Lindy Bombing the local Whole Foods, Yoga and Pilates are probably the route you’ve taken. You care about animals (Cobra, Downward Facing Dog, Crane, Ustrasana) and the environment (Tadasana, Half Moon) and don’t mind the 15 minutes of meditation at the end of class, in which you focus on the “om” of your perfect swing-out, and wonder why you can’t “bind” yourself like your classmates (see below).

3. Non-Swing Dance Forms

“I’m into the roots.”

Dancing is more than a passion for you. It is part of your history, and you want to be part of its history. You’ve signed up at your local studio for any type of organic dance form that could possibly be related to swing dancing. Rhythmic Tap and African Dancing are at the top of the list, mainly because they’re “roots dances,” followed closely by Belly Dancing, which you claim “helps with your isolations.” Honestly, you’re not quite sure how it will all work together, but you are positive that it will take your dancing “to the next level,” or at least help you make finals in the Solo Blues contest at ULHS.
